Review: Hack/Slash #25 Finale

hack-slash25This is it. The big sizzling finale, leaving the readers of Hack/Slash with the final issue to be written at this point, at least according to the writer. After 78 issues (and not even sure if the HS/Dynamite crossovers are taken into account) we can only read more about Cassie Hack via a new crossover, coming to stores in 2013. But for now… this is the end of an era!

The pack of friends, the slasher slayers, make a final stand and it all works out so very well… or does it?

The pack discovers that the Black Lamp Society is putting slasher-turning liquid into a shipment of soda and intend to hand this out at a rock-concert, turning many fans into raving lunatics. Using all resources available Vlad and Cassie make this the epic battle the readers as well as the characters deserve, with lots of emo-drama as well as intense character-driven momentum in which we see clearly how Seely loves the characters and wants the best for them. Seeley does not hold back in throwing hardships and tough decisions at our heroes, but they endure, even though Seeley cannot promiss a happy Hollywood ending for all of them.

Cassie and Vlad stay in character during the entire finale, but Cat Curio marks the freshness of this issue, coming up with a solution that marks a brighter future for humankind.

The only real gripe I have with the Finale is the fact that in previous issues Lisa and Chris are offed as well as the too-fast moving sequences like the travelling-through-Nef being done completely off-camera.

Looking back I remember discovering the first issue oneshot with that amazing Stefano Caselli cover that sucked me right in. I remember putting this series on instant pre-order and never even swaying into tradewaiting. From amazing oneshots and astonishing crossovers to stunning monthly comics to impossible to find (Mercy Sparxx… booohoooo) comics, I have never given up on this title and looking back at all the historic issues as well as the neglectable issues, I can honestly say: I love you Tim Seeley! Thank you so very much for giving the world Cassie Hack and her band of misfits, freaks and heroes. And cheers to Vlad, because never has there been a monster-faced dude with so much humanity per square inch of freakiness!
