Babelicious: Spider-Woman by Manara
Celebrating the new Greg Land artsy series, spinning out of the Spiderverse-event Marvel created, Marvel commissioned Manara to do what he does best… and then making me eager to read a follow-up to his and Grant Morrison’s X-WOMEN.
Or you can google around and see what comic book fans and fellow-artists think about Jessica’s stance/position, speak about ethical issues (sexy vs sexual, the ” I have children ” argument…) or discuss the anatomy and the fact that Spider-Woman is about to fall on her face because she is out of balance even. Or we can discuss the ‘ sex sells ‘ argument… or go around yelling how this makes you feel the same as watching Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda-video or Vivids‘ X-MEN XXX (which is true even!!! It does make you FEEL so it works!)
Face it, this is Manara. He even seems to have rehashed an older piece of himself (CLICK) and updated to make it even cooler, even more sexy, even more Manara as well as giving his contractor exactly what he requested and wanted.
I just want more X-WOMEN comics by Manara!! NOW!!!
I can add this as well: I think perhaps MORE female readers will now turn heads. The ZEITGEIST is just that a lot of very strong-willed, strong-character women are around. More then ever, I guess. I recollect the strong female following of a title like Jim Balent’s `Tarot Witch of The Black Rose´ with its nudity, sexualized stories and magically inspired stories. And certainly there are more titles and creators (Terry Moore with SiP, Echo and Rachel come to mind) who have strong female characters in the lead as well as a strong female following in sales!
I say: amen to that!

Or as Marvel senior vice president of publishing Tom Brevoort stated via his Tumblr:
“I think a conversation about how women are depicted in comics is relevant at this point, and definitely seems to be bubbling up from the zeitgeist,” Brevoort concluded. “That too is fine. Nothing gets better unless ideas are communicated.”
