Captain Kronos #1
I grew up on the old Hammer horror films and I was ecstatic when Titan and Hammer teamed up to give us comic book versions of their old films. And now, here comes one of my influences, kind of a secondary influence but an influence none the less, for Karl Vincent: Vampire Hunter! Our good captain continues his quest to rid the earth of vampires and his quest now leads him to the dark forests of Romania.
Dan Abnett wastes no time in bringing us into the action. Captain Kronos first pages are a bloody battle between our antagonist and dozens of the bloodsucking fiends. Then we find our hero riding into town with a grateful citizen as he describes the liberties the bloodsuckers are taking. He clearly hopes that Kronos can effectively eliminate their vampire threat. Our good skipper discovers the reality of what’s been happening in this town and it’s not a pretty site! It’s a fun read and evokes the old Hammer horror style of film making.
Tom Mandrake brings a medieval feeling to the proceedings with just the right amount of contrast and polarity that greatly enhance Abnett’s words, the panels are standard and old fashioned which works well with this tale set in mid-17th century eastern Europe. His splash pages are commanding and the first page we see of our hero shows us a no-nonsense protagonist that is ready for the evils that await! Great stuff.
This issue delivers on all fronts. The action is there from the beginning and the conflict between Kronos and the townspeople help make this an awesome read. I highly recommend this title to fans of any vampire hunter comic book. If you can’t get enough of Buffy the Vampire Slayer then give this title a shot. You’ll be glad you did. The final panel which show the reality of what the good captain was up against is truly shocking…To be continued.
