GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY FCBD 2014

Marvel Comics is giving fans a 3-way surprise with GOTG as well as THANOS and an introduction into the biggest Spider-saga since the Clone Saga (I think), named SPIDER-VERSE.

GOTG delivers a perfect introductory issue for the GOTG and all the characters involved as well as the introduction of a new member to the GOTG-team, which came as a total surprise! Introducing all these characters made me think about the trailer to the new GOTG-movie and the honest yet silly humour is also very available.

The writing by Bendis is as solid and entertaining as always and the art by Nick Bradshaw is detailed and strong! GOTG is set up as the next big thing, and believe me as I see that it is a HUGE thing!

THANOS introduces a hallucinatory tale for Drax as he is travelling between planes, in search of… answers I guess. Thanos is always looking for answers, so it seems. Jim Starlin returns for a strong new tale in THANOS: THE INFINITY REVELATION.

SPIDER-VERSE is the huge Spider-fest crossover in which Morlun returns to suck the life out of our favorite Arachnoid… in every alternative universe even! First on his list is the Neil Gaiman 1602 version as an appetizer of sorts!

VALIANT UNIVERSE HANDBOOK #1 FCBD 2014

Valiant is becoming (or already is!!) a big player in the comic book market today. In record time Valiant has resurfaced, re-branding their original characters with a massive infusion of new creative talent, making the Valiant Universe the next big thing!

With this handbook you will have a hefty textual introduction into every major character in this new exciting universe, as well as listing the crucial collections per character!

RISE OF THE MAGI #0 FCBD 2014

Top Cow is offering a complete introductory issue for a new ongoing series. A story about magic and a new re-telling of what magic might be. In this Top Cow world a darkness is entering and corrupting the good that is possessed by the innocent. Innocence is found in the teenager wanna-be spellcaster Asa.

When first browsing this book I was disappointed with the artwork, but during the turning of pages the cartoony non-Silvestri art grows on you and the dark cliffhanger is balanced perfectly by the art-team.

I gather it was a HUGE leap-of-faith to have a Silvestri-cover and a totally different art-style underneath, but the gamble paid off.

This is one exciting new start of a series and FCBD has a new GOTTOHAVEIT in their hands.

ROCKET RACCOON FCBD 2014

Rocket Raccoon is off-the-charts in this oneshot that Marvel is offering this FCBD, trying to rescue a Princess and wreaking havoc while doing so. The action is filled with high-octane dynamite and it also has Groot, and we all love Groot!

I have no idea if this comic supports a digital-only release or the start of a new series (although this clearly is a oneshot issue) but Marvel made sure this is a not only a commercial endeavour but a fun read at that!

PROJECT BLACK SKY FCBD 2014

Dark Horse delivers a strong tale, of an old hero in the now-time teaming up with a braggy brain-reader to not only battle evil, but go further and notice that evil is closer then one might think. When Captain Midnight and Brain Boy discover that the superpowered gorilla Ape-X, is not the enemy they were led to believe, a new tale is spun and Dark Horse delivers a strong debuting issue to their new line of adventure comics, in which the old and the new, both in art, in style, in storytelling as in characters are crossing over into a new mix of fantasy!

ARMOR HUNTERS FCBD 2014

X-O Manowar has a special armour he has bonded with. And ever since he has, there have been people wanting that power for themselves. And this FCBD-offering now starts a new crossover about a group of baddies out to get that armour, any way they can!

RAI tells about the life 2000 years from now and how people live, fear, love and how they need RAI to make sure life can continue.

Valiant’s old heroes are told in new ways, drawn in new ways, making them more then they ever were in the 90’s and making this complete reboot worth your time and money!

2000AD FCBD 2014

2000AD offers 48 pages of brain-scrubbing action, as they tell us themselves. And they are right! No less then 6 big stories combined with 3 very short stories make up for an early Xmas, I would say!

JUDGE DREDD stars in a story in which he saves a rookie remotely as well stars in Newspaper reprints. Dredd is one tough, self-righteous guy and the parody especially in the early works are so clear it would take a blind not to see. The serious tone of a more adapted character of the latter stories are just as fun though, but you do have to take the British sense of humor (dark… very dark at times) into account!

SLAINE is offering a glimpse of barbaric mayhem as only Slaine can bring to the plate.

ROGUE TROOPER is a GI out looking for a traitor.

JUDGE ANDERSON is part of the Psi-Division and encounters a golemn.

ABSALOM is an old cop, still able to complete single-handedly take down a group of punks, despite him looking as a drunken Einstein.

DURHAM RED is a vampire-bountyhunter, which means she is vampire AND bounty-hunter combined. SciFi-setting added and this is odd yet gorgeous to read!

2000AD let this one rip and it oozes with fun stories only 2000AD can provide!
