0Given to me: “Tom Cruise The Mummy pays homage to Last Rites”
Tom Cruise Film ‘The Mummy” pays homage to my novel/film Last Rites: The Return of Sebastian Vasilis.
I finally got around to seeing the new Mummy with Tom Cruise. I must say that, even though it wasn’t a great movie, it also wasn’t as bad as the critics made it out to be. The critics were right in saying that many characters are under-developed, especially the Tom Cruise character, we learn virtually nothing about his background, who is he? And only vague comments on why he is doing what he is doing. However, the film has some good shock moments, special effects and action. I’ll save the rest for my review on the movie.
I don’t care what anyone says. The screenwriters for the 2017 The Mummy had to have read my novel, Last Rites: The Return of Sebastian Vasilis. The plane crash scene is almost identical to the one in my book. If you come across the novel, the scene in question is in Chapter 15, Cairo (p. 160 in the second edition.) In the Tom Cruise movie, the plane is making its escape when it runs into a flock of crows. A bird crashes into one of the windows on the plane, Cruise looks out and sees what appears to be a black cloud but as the cloud gets closer, it’s apparent that they are headed straight for a flock of crows that is also flying directly toward the plane in attack mode. The crows fly into the plane causing it to crash.
In Last Rites: the return of Sebastian Vasilis Karl Vincent, Kate Bryant, Athena Timon and the vampire Lyndon Johnson, who is in a coffin in the cargo hold, are on a flight to Cairo Egypt in an attempt to prevent the resurrection of the Egyptian vampire/demigod Sekhmet when Karl notices something black crashing into one of the windows. As Karl looks through the window he sees an ominous cloud which seems to be following the plane. As the cloud approaches, Karl realizes that the cloud is actually a swarm of bats. The bats fly into the plane causing it to crash, just like in the Tom Cruise movie. And, also just like the movie, both the Tom Cruise character and Karl Vincent survive the plane crash! Could all of this just be a coincidence? I’m pretty sure that someone involved with this film had to have read my book. I invite you to read the novel, available on amazon, or the comic book version, issue 5, available on Indyplanet and Drive-ThruComics and compare it to the scene in the movie and you decide for yourself. The movie version of the novel is in production now from Crisp FilmWorks.
