“Tim reached out a little over a year ago via our mutual friend, Cully Hamner, with the idea to do this crossover. My initial thought, before talking with Tim, was ‘probably not.’ This was about 6 months after Jason’s passing—his mom was in the middle of settling his estate—it just wasn’t something on her radar or mine. But, when I talked to Tim it was immediately clear that he was a huge fan of BODY BAGS, that Jason’s work had been a strong influence on him, and that this was something he and Stefano really wanted to do. We talked about possible ideas and I was already seeing how this could work. I talked to Jason’s mom and she was open to it.
Not long after that I did a zoom with both Tim and Stefano, meeting Ste for the first time. Ste told me about he and Jason’s relationship, how they got to be friends and would often Skype when they were both at their drawing tables, and how he wanted to help Jason’s legacy live on by doing this crossover. As Ste talked about why he wanted to do this and his friendship with Jason, it became very emotional for me. All the concerns I had about doing this without Jason just went away; I knew Mack and Panda were in good hands. Plus, Tim’s idea for the story was so good—it’s set over one night in Terminus, right after the Father’s Day story ends, and he had such a great grasp of how to bring these two worlds together. I was sold and it was easy to recommend this to Jason’s mom.
I’ve had a few people ask me if Jason would have been OK with this, as those of us that knew him know how precious he was about his characters; but years ago, we’d talked about bringing in other creators to do BODY BAGS stories (his idea, not mine). Kind of like how Mignola did with ‘Hellboy’ (different artists and writers expanding that universe). So, it was something he’d considered. At the time his desire was to do a 100-page mini-series every year or two, and then supplement that main story by bringing in other writers and artists to do stories that would help expand his universe. He even took a meeting with an A-list writer about it. For various reasons none of that happened, but it was something he wanted to do.
And I kept going back to a pin-up Jason did in a ‘Vampirella’ comic back in the 90’s, where Clownface and Panda were facing off against that iconic character. I’d asked him about it once, and he said he just thought it was a fun to see his characters interact with Vampirella. And I think he’d feel the same way about this story, with Clownface and Panda facing off against Vlad and Cassie.
Don’t get me wrong. If you just can’t stand the thought of someone else writing and drawing these characters, I totally understand. Just know that everyone involved is doing this to honor Jason’s legacy in their own way, and hopefully that leads to something special.”
