Hell Has a New Queen: Lady Death Takes Over the Arcade in ‘Demonicron’
Side-Scrolling Arcade Carnage Meets Gothic Fantasy
The underworld is getting a heavy-metal makeover this summer with the upcoming release of Lady Death: Demonicron. Developed and published by Art Of Play Interactive in direct partnership with Coffin Comics, this game is a brilliant love letter to 1990s arcade classics and to Lady Death fans. Rather than a repetitive, modern arena fighter, the game delivers a robust, 15-level side-scrolling hack-and-slash experience. The developers describe the gameplay loop as the ultimate love child of Mortal Kombat and Golden Axe, allowing players to slash, burn, and magic-wield their way through horrific hordes either solo or in split-screen co-op.
Release Dates, Target Platforms, and Narrative Depth
The game is officially scheduled to unlock on July 30, 2026. While its playable demo on Steam is currently generating massive interest, console players can also rejoice, as the game will also be released on PlayStation 5.

The narrative follows Lady Death as she is hunted through time and reality by a mysterious and lethal new adversary. To survive, she must utilize her dark sorcery across surreal, hand-drawn 2D landscapes. True to its comic roots, the game fully embraces mature themes, featuring stylized, bloody violence, multiple endings, and story-rich choices that directly impact the player’s journey.
Early Impressions and the Symphony of Slaughter
Early player feedback from the Steam demo has been incredibly positive, particularly regarding the game’s tight, responsive arcade mechanics and its driving industrial-metal soundtrack. Fans of the franchise have noted that the 2D animation perfectly captures the character’s powerful and alluring presence. By prioritizing high-quality, hand-drawn art over generic modern visuals, the game manages to feel both nostalgic and entirely fresh.

A first look at the underworld in motion: This gameplay mosaic showcases the title’s striking, hand-drawn 2D aesthetic. Players can expect a glorious return to classic 90s-style side-scrolling arcade hack-and-slash mechanics, complete with fluid swordplay, devastating dark magic, and highly stylized comic-book violence as Lady Death carves her way through hell’s demonic legions. Over Three Decades of Supernatural Comic Legacy
For the uninitiated, Lady Death has been a premier icon of independent comic book badasses since her debut in 1991. Created by Brian Pulido and Steven Hughes, her story is a grand, operatic hybrid of horror, gothic mythology, and supernatural urban fantasy. Originally a medieval woman named Hope who traded her soul to survive damnation, she ultimately conquered the underworld to become its rightful ruler.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other legendary female comic book characters like Vampirella and Red Sonja, Lady Death has long been celebrated for a rare industry standard: her interior sequential art has always been just as top-notch, detailed, and jaw-dropping as her premium cover art. While collecting the physical back issues can be an expensive endeavor today, Lady Death: Demonicron looks poised to give fans an affordable, interactive, and beautifully authentic piece of that legendary legacy.
