Review: Carrie Fisher Tribute

It seemed that at least one celebrity per week was passing away on a regular basis in 2016. The saddest passing for Star Wars and Sci-fi fans in general was to hear that Carrie Fisher, our beloved Princess Leia Organa had passed on just before the new year. Tidal Wave has dedicated this comic book to her memory. This issue begins with Fisher’s birth to celebrity parents Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds (who, ironically, passed away just a day after her daughter did.) It’s a pretty straight forward telling of her life.

The Creative Team:

Cooke and Frizell lay out the tale of Carrie’s life and nutshell it into 27 pages of comic book. It works as a reference piece but not as a narrative. Still, it is the first comic book to pay tribute to the iconic actress who brought joy to millions of fans. If you’re a Carrie Fisher fan that wants to find the biggest moments of her life in a single volume, then this is the comic book for you. In what seems to be just the writers going through the tabloids to get news clips winds up being a touching tribute from an unexpected source. Definitely add this one to your Carrie Fisher collection.

Paul and Webb bring us the full Carrie Fisher in this issue as they pour through her life and capture her most poignant moments. We see her age gracefully as the title character finds herself in her craft and writes her autobiography discovering who she really is. It’s handled with a panache that truly captures the star’s finer moments as they scour through her life.

The Cover:

This cover captures what a Carrie Fisher fan would want to see. The star in her most iconic role. The look on her face is somber letting us know that something tragic has happened to her and there’s an autograph in the upper right hand corner. The word Tribute at the bottom lets us know that we’re not picking up a re-enactment of her life but a love letter from the publisher to one of the most iconic actresses in Science Fiction. It is sure to grab the comic book store surfer and bring a lump to their throat as they add this one to their collection.

In Conclusion:

It’s not a complicated story and on the surface, seems a bit simple, but if you want to look over the life of one of the most treasured actresses in the world of Science Fiction but don’t have the time to do the research yourself, then this is the issue for you. It’s a treasure trove of historic incidents that show a determined young actress rise to stardom. ***
