Review: Catalyst Prime: Incidentals #5

“…Been back to the Beach lately?” – Marko Brenner

Our story begins at L.A.P.D. headquarters. Detective Platte gets a visit from a strange man who seems to know more about him than he should. The man identifies himself as Marko Brenner and he tells our hero that he knows where the girl is. Brenner leads him to the Chenco building and tells Platte there are more like him.

The Creative Team:

Joe Casey takes his time in this chapter and eases us into the revelation of where the girl is. He shows us the team that will be going on this mission and each one has special abilities, not to mention that they are well defined characters with interesting personalities. Not you’re stereotypical superhero fare. It’s a proceed with caution tale as our heroes go forth in stealth mode.

Will Rosado brings this motley crew into being in a most realistic way. Not everyone is square jawed and muscular, some of them are bald, not all that attractive and some even have paunches. It’s a superhero team with warts and all. The kind of people you knew always existed but didn’t think they’d ever be in a comic book. This is great stuff. I really enjoyed his overhead shots and use of angles to tell the story.

In Conclusion:

Gritty, realistic and slow moving. Things people don’t usually see in a comic book, but it works! Sometimes we need to get to know the characters before we can care about them. The action does pick up eventually when our antagonists overstep their boundaries. And when it does, get ready for a huge…to be continued! *** (8.3 rating)
