Review: Chastity #2

Chastity02CovLupacchinoChastity “Chas” Marks is dead—at least that’s what she told us at the cliffhanger ending of her debut issue. And considering she’d just been drained of most of her blood and almost torn completely in half by a vampire, she’d have a better idea than most people if that’s true. Or was true. Since this series is set in the 1980s, and Chastity is narrating it, that means she’s looking back at the origin story of how she became a vampire and vampire hunter. But don’t worry about Chastity: Odds are better than good that she’s survived to the present day, since she’s currently costarring in Chaos, the miniseries that’s rebooting the characters of the late Chaos! Comics universe—Evil Ernie, Purgatori, Chastity, and others—courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment. (Issue #4 is now on sale.)

Spoilers ahead!

Chastity #2—written by Marc Andreyko (Batwoman) and illustrated by Dave Acosta (Grimm Fairy Tales Presents Tales from Oz)—picks up shortly after Chastity’s been mauled by her former idol, bestselling author—and psycho vampire—Alyce Stonecliff, with Chastity in an ambulance, on her way to the nearest emergency room. It should come as no surprise that the attack has turned her into one of Alyce’s vampiric offspring; the real surprise comes when Chas finds what’s lying in wait for her when she sets out to make sense of what just happened. Compared to Alyce, this shocker could put a quick end to Chas’s short undead life. (But, y’know, not really, given her Chaos #4 appearance this month.)

Bottom line? Chas’s story is one that should appeal to horror fans as well as comic fans in search of strong female leads, and the art—which appears to be reproduced straight from Acosta’s pencils—is equal parts moody and horrifying in presenting the waking nightmare into which Chas has been thrown. Definitely give it a try.
