0Review: Evil Dead 2: Revenge of Jack the Ripper
Between Dynamite and Space Goat, I can’t get enough of Evil Dead comics. After reviewing a ton of comics and movies I finally get around to reading this SGP gem. The issue opens with our favorite Deadite hunter embarking on Hollywood to feature in a movie about the notorious Jack the Ripper.
Ash is upset when he finally sees his part in the script and he only has one line. The producer assures him that it’s the signature catch phrase of the movie. Just as they’re about to film the first scene, a blood curdling scream is heard and murder isn’t just the thing of this fictional movie anymore. Great opening.
The Creative Team:
Georgia Ball by now knows how to have a lot of fun in the Evil Dead universe. The mystery of who the Jack the Ripper killer is involves all the popular suspects from history. Montague John Druitt, Seweryn Kłosowski, Aaron Kosminski, Michael Ostrog, John Pizer, James Thomas Sadler and Francis Tumblety. Ash travels through time in an effort to solve the mystery himself and winds up in London around 1888. What he discovers will affect his view of the serial killer and himself, a nice whodunit with a solution the protagonist may not want to discover. Great stuff!
Francisco Maurez shines as he adapts Ash Williams to this little tale of murder and mayhem. From his Hollywood recreation of London in 1888 to the actual setting, we’re treated to a visual feast that any fan of Jack the Ripper stories and Evil Dead stories is sure to enjoy. The look of the victims is gruesome and re-enforces that these aren’t comics for the kiddies. A great read throughout.
In Conclusion:
I am a great enthusiast of the mystery of Jack the Ripper. I’ve read several books on the topic and seen a lot of the movies based on the subject. I’ve drawn my own conclusions as to who the killer might have been and I seriously can’t get enough on the issue. This story came across as great fun. My only complaint is that the story didn’t seem complete (perhaps another volume is coming?) but it was cool to see Ash Williams trying to track down Jack the Ripper. It’s a worthy addition to any Evil Dead fans collection and to Jack the Ripper enthusiasts. Get your copy today! *** (7.6 rating.)
