Review: Hell and Holy Water #1
Hell and Holy Water #1 is a fast paced premier from an independent comic book creator. The Creator was inspired by the movie Two Mules for Sister Sarah starring Clint Eastwood and Shirley McLane. Jayson Hel is a bad ass recruited by Sister Bella to aid her in the quest to rid the world of demons. They form a group of similar bad asses to join them as they travel the countryside saving the country from evil creatures! It’s an adrenalin rush unlike any other with a special appearance by Johnny Cash and an allusion to next issue’s team up with Karl Vincent: Vampire Hunter. Gotta love it!
Creative team
Glaister Silverback Ormsby is Silverback comics. His story opens with Sister Bella visiting Jayson she tells him about her order, which is the Apostolic Penitentiary. It’s an order in the catholic church which deals with paranormal forces. An unknown mobster has put out a hit on the nun. We’re also introduced to the title’s chief antagonist: a demon/human hybrid named Killian. Our heroes use water guns with holy water to combat their enemies. It’s a unique title and worth looking into.
The Cover
It’s all red and black, letting you know that demons and Hell will play a prominent role in this title there’s a huge demon staring straight ahead, daring you to open this issue and discover what’s inside. If Jayson has anything to do with it he’s about to get his bad ass kicked! If you love supernatural characters like Spawn, Ghost Rider, or Constantine, you might want to give this title a shot.
In Conclusion
Hell and Holy Water, though not a religious comic (Evangelicals may not like some of the language used,) explores themes of faith and religion in a unique way. Sister Bella is catholic so, what doctrinal issues exist (again, it’s not a “Christian” comic per say) are from a catholic perspective. We see our heroes wrestling with literal demons and their own personal demons as well. The final page leads us to the promise of an action packed issue and Karl Vincent too! Pick it up today, you’ll be glad you did.
