Review: Numbercruncher HC Collection
Heaven is the ultimate bureaucracy. That is what we learn from writer Si Spurrier.
He created a Heaven with “at its head, not a white-haired anthropomorphic deity with a harp and a throne but a wizened, weaselling old man with bad breath and bad attitude.” This deity makes sure everything ‘adds’ up and there is no ‘ deficit ‘ or ‘window-dressing’.
He does not do this alone, by the way! He has a vast legion of balancing ‘civil servant’ souls, who had the chance to balance out their own checkbook by trading their soul. Most of them hate the fact that their servitude is infinite but apparantly there is no loophole, especially not according to “Bastard Zane, a surly civil servant with a big gun whose job it is to stop those who think they can buck karma…”
But that is until Zane meets Richard Thyme, who is described as a ‘genius mathematician and a man who will do whatever it takes to defy Fate and return to his one true love – even if he is dead’.
And Richard, through many forms and many incarnations and a menacing amount of karma-rewrites, makes sure Zane as well as the Deity learn their own important lessons!
Si Spurrier is telling a tale which will keep you to the edge of your karma-seat, wishing true love will indeed overcome all. Balancing out Spurrier’s own karma is the solid art from PJ Holden and a special shout goes out to colorist Jordie Bellaire, who manages to make sure the ‘divine’ and ‘worldly’ adventures are done in different color schemes which makes the complete HC-treatment even more appealing!
Come on and join the band to make sure you WILL beat the system to a pulp!.
