Review: Sherlock: A Study in Pink #4
We’re now at issue 4 of the adaptation of the BBC-TV series Sherlock: A Study in Pink. Holmes and Watson are tracking the killer and believe he has one of the victim’s, Jennifer’s, phone. They texted whoever has the phone with instructions to meet at 22 Northumberland street. The Detective and Doctor are patiently waiting in a restaurant. The pair run into Angelo, a man that Sherlock helped clear of a murder charge years ago.
The Creative Team:
Steven Moffat does a good job adapting his own work to the medium of comic books. The pacing is good and as soon as we’re out of the restaurant the action picks up and he leads the sleuth and physician on a wild maze as they track the killer. Jay’s art really captures the characters and their situations in a dramatic way. His panels are unique and bring the action home in a unique way.
The Cover:
This cover is very intriguing. It shows a young Holmes and Watson; it almost reminds me of the old Steven Spielberg movie Young Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is adjusting one glove while Watson is standing there with his arms folded. Their forms bleed into a dark alley with a shadowy figure standing next to a taxi. There’s a body on the sidewalk next to him. This cover should pique the curiosity of the average comic store surfer.
In Conclusion:
The killer always seems to be one step ahead of our heroes. However, our favorite detective is always finding clues. Sometimes in the most remote places. A cab pulls up next to the address that Holmes and Watson are waiting at. No one gets out and no one gets in. It’s just sitting there, taunting our heroes. Watson and Holmes head towards the cab and it takes off, leaving our heroes confused. The killer seems to be toying with them. He doesn’t think that Holmes has the deductive skills to catch him. Indeed, he leaves Holmes and Watson behind even though the two give chase and want to see him caught, he outruns them. As the two make their way back home Angelo shows up again in a surprise turn. To be continued.
