Review: StarCraft: Scavengers #2

Something is out there! Our heroes have lost contact with the away team and time is running out, the situation is desperate. No matter what might have happened the crew needs to obtain the Power cell!

The Creative Team:

Jody Houser pumps up the adrenalin from page one. She keeps the reader guessing on every page as the crew of the Magpie doesn’t have any idea what they might be facing. They finally discover their crewmates and it’s not what they were expecting. The tension mounts as the crew must decide if it wants to go after the rest of their unit or flee the unknown danger. I really enjoy how Houser can keep the suspense factor up from page to page. Great stuff includes Caleb’s idea for dealing with the situation and what they find as they try to return to their ship.

Gabriel Guzman creates the right atmosphere to go with Houser’s words. The panels are eerie and appropriately dark, I love how he approaches the material and the characters confused looks say a lot about their situation. Highlights include the final splash page and reveal plus the first glimpse of the aliens which shows us just enough to let us know that they’re not of this world (sorry for the pun) but also enough to know that they’re probably a lot more powerful than we think they are.

In Conclusion:

What appears to be just an Alien knock off at first is revealed to be a whole lot more as we discover information about the mission and what our protagonists are up against. The experienced crew has no way of knowing their opponents’ strengths or weakness and this makes it difficult for the Captain to gauge what to do. When the crew makes it back to the ship things take an unexpected turn when…to be continued! *** (8.2 rating)
