Review: The Shadow/Batman #6 (of 6) The Finale

At long last, the conclusion to one of my favorite comics that I’ve reviewed since I started reviewing comics over a year ago.

The issue opens in the heat of battle as Robin is being controlled by his grandfather. Steve Orlando wastes no time on frivolous explanations as the Batman has to find a way to defeat his son without killing him. The two villains are interlinked and ones success depends upon the other Ras Al Ghul and Shiwan Khan make a formidable pair of antagonists as the fight progresses. Great stuff includes Shiwan Khan’s overconfidence as he’s sure that he’s got the Shadow just where he wants him and Ras Al Ghul bent on destroying members of his own family in a twisted game of human chess!

Giovanni Timpano brings the same energy to this issue that he brought to the whole series and his characters look determined and we can feel the tension as each character is fighting not just for their lives but also for their souls. Highlights include the battle between Robin and Batman as Damian Wayne is being controlled by his grandfather in an attempt to kill his father. Also the final splash page which seems to hint that their might be another team up down the road.

In Conclusion:

This has been such a satisfying read. If the big two would keep churning out stories like this then they wouldn’t need to rely on gimmicks to sell comics, They’re so caught up in rebooting their companies that they can’t see the simplicity of just telling awesome comic book stories, good vs. evil, with great power comes great responsibility, make sure you take the trash out after supper, etc. etc. I don’t want to give away what happens but it’s a nice surprise and reaffirms both the Batman’s and the Shadow’s gaining confidence and both becoming stronger people with this battle. ***** (10 rating)
