0Review: Things you Shouldn’t Remember #1
It’s Pulp Fiction meets Total Recall with a touch of Men in Black. In this tale of different stories that will obviously intertwine down the road. First, we’re introduced to John Pellman and Tom Conway who seem to be hit men ala John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in the aforementioned Pulp Fiction. Then we find Poker hustler Marc Royles, a character similar to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s from Sin City; A Dame to Die For, in bed with the beautiful Monica Young. He’s just come off a winning spree and he’s celebrating with the prettiest girl he could find. We don’t see the connection in issue one but it looks to be leading us to a climactic payoff in future issues.
Luis Roldan Torquemada has probably seen every Quentin Tarantino movie ever made. His storytelling style is like the movie moguls and that’s a good thing. The first issue is a fun read, kinda quirky and keeps you guessing as to how these characters will finally interact in future issues. The title of this story invokes the movie Things to do in Denver When You’re Dead. Which, itself, is considered to be a Pulp Fiction clone from Tarantino wannabe Gary Fleder. Torquemada’s pacing is good and it leaves you clamoring for more.
Mariano Eliceche compliments Torquemada’s style exquisitely. His pages bring you into the situation one panel at a time. We think we’re going into an alien invasion story only to realize that what we’re seeing is a television show being viewed by one of the main characters. It’s a nice little lead in and elicits a chuckle from the reader. The artistic style keeps you guessing just as well as Torquemada’s story telling. These two go together as naturally as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby did in the 60’s.
In Conclusion:
If you love Quentin Tarantino and old-style noir storytelling then this issue is for you. The characters are well thought out three dimensional originals and the stories pique our interest and keep us turning each page with curious inquisition and just as soon as we think we know how issue one is going to end, it’s off to Ocala Florida where we’re introduced to another situation that won’t be resolved in this issue. I love a good whodunit and this is shaping up to be one of the best I’ve seen in a while, especially in the medium of comic books. Excellent stuff here. ***1/2 (8.7 rating)
