0Review: Things you shouldn’t remember #2
The Handlers are a mysterious group that are sent out to eradicate those who “remember” certain things, like song lyrics and historical figures. They are searching for a poker player, Marc Roister, and a photographer, Travis Trembley. This issue opens in a forbidden library. A librarian named Kevin (great name) is singing along to an old favorite when the “Master” arrives. He instructs Kevin to research a band called the “Challuca Tribe.”
Luis Roldan Torquemada wastes no time brining us into this forbidden universe as Kevin is tied at the wrists and led away by “Tommy” who claims to be recruiting him, but for what purpose we’re not told. He is led into a room where certain unfortunate souls are kept. I won’t reveal what happened here, but if you’re a Quentin Tarantino fan I think you’ll enjoy the proceedings, once again it’s not for the squeamish. Louis keeps us guessing on every page as to what is going to happen next. A definite page turner that you won’t be able to put down. Great stuff!
Mariano Eliceche treats the story with a sadistic humor. It is easily reminiscent of something Sam Raimi or David Cronenberg would have come up with. Each panel leads us to a search with the characters appropriately confused as to what they find. It’s got a slightly cartoonish quality, but not to the point of absurdity. Keeping the characters in a slightly whacked universe that we still don’t know much about. The artist compliments the author in a subtle way. I really enjoyed watching the tale unfold.
In conclusion:
We aren’t told much about why these shenanigans are happening in this issue, but we are treated to some visual shocks that bring us closer to the desperation experienced by The Handlers as they try to conceal reality from the citizens of this world. Apparently, the people who are recalling seemingly harmless things like song lyrics are on the verge of letting the proverbial cat out of the bag. And, as we can see in this issue, they are willing to do anything to stop it. In Sacramento, California, Christine Wahnfried finds herself being followed by an innocent looking Chihuahua. But what she faces by the end of this issue is out of this world! To be continued. ***1/2 (8.7 rating)
