0Review: Vampirella (Vol.5) #2
“Killing the already dead is no sin.” – random nun.
This issue begins a year ago during a neighborhood watch. Our protagonist is feeding her cat when she notices a pimp on the street corner attempting to pimp out a little girl. Vampirella thwarts his plans in a satisfying way.
The Creative Team:
Christopher Priest has tapped into the karma that creates awesome Vampirella stories. So much so that the first issue in this series became a top ten seller and Dynamite’s biggest selling comic of all time. Here he shows this female vamp at her blood-sucking best. It seems our stalwart extraterrestrial parasite is undergoing therapy for the actions that led to many deaths a year ago. This title is a fantastic read and unlike anything I’ve read in comics before. Priest breathes new life into a 50-year-old icon. Great stuff includes a look into the sexual prowess of our anti-hero and the bible quoting machine gun-toting nuns.
Ergun Gundu is a great fit for Priests words. This Vampirella is a more adult-oriented title and Gundu is up to the task of bringing the sensuality of this vampire to the forefront. Highlights include the splash of the nun waving a gun and the battle with the werewolves.
In Conclusion:
This comic unfolds like a strange acid trip and brings together so many elements of what made Vampirella great in the first place and expands upon them. It takes so many different twists and turns that we hardly have time to come up for air. It’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas meets Carmilla. A helluva ride that only promises to get better with the next issue. ***** (9.8 rating)
