Review: Van Helsing ‘Sword of Heaven’ #1
Van Helsing is back! This time she’s headed to India in search of the legendary blade which is rumored to end vampirism forever! But she’s not alone on this quest. There are others that are willing to do anything, including kill, to get their hands on this weapon!
Chuck Dixon knows how to craft an adventure and this one has it all! Several different kinds of vampires, exotic locales and one kick-ass hero in the title character! What draws us into this adventure is the fast pace and different kinds of vampires, like we’ve never seen before in a Van Helsing comic. She stops one vampire by tossing him a rubics cube! Great stuff includes Van Helsing getting arrested by Indian authorities and the history of this story’s McGuffin.
Julius Abrera brings a certain menace to our female vampire hunter that is much needed in these pages. Her hatred of vampires is on grand display in that stoic face of hers and the look of downtown India is scary at night, as it should be. The vampires are different than any that have graced these pages and it’s a lot of fun to try and figure them out. Highlights include the fight between Van Helsing and the first vampire and the splash of the warrior holding this issues McGuffin (Sword.)
In Conclusion:
A great beginning for what could shape up to be another Van Helsing classic! Veteran writer Chuck Dixon does a great job with chapter one and the ending leaves us anticipating more. ***1/2 (8.2 rating)
