Review: Van Helsing vs. Dracula #1
I finally get to review a comic book with the prince of darkness. Why is this significant? Because I’m going to include Dracula in the next “Karl Vincent: Vampire Hunter” story (shameless self promotion.) Dracula does make an appearance in “Last Rites: The Return of Sebastian Vasilis” but only in a flashback scene. But now on with the review:
First the art. The art is slightly on the cartoony side which works for this story since it has a humorous vein throughout. Great stuff.
I always loved my vampire stories with a dose of fun in them. “Lost Boys” and “Fright Night” being two of my favorite films of the ’80’s. And this comic delivers on both ends, here’s an example:
Harker: (to a vampire creature) em…Tea?
Vampire Creature: No, no thank you. Do you have any blood perhaps?
Harker: Absolutely not!
Vampire Creature: (pause) perhaps if you were to make a slight incision on your wrist…
There’s humor and action on every page. This is the fourth issue in a five issue story, so once again we’re in the middle of a story arc. according to the story blog Liesel Van Helsing has survived some evil from her past and moved on with her life. Her friends, including Harker, have lured her back into the fight and they are on their way to rescue Mina. They have to face a creature called the Steward of Rome which has become something more than a vampire.
Van Helsing has a falling out with her boyfriend, Hades, who apparently lied to her about this mission in a previous issue They have a brief reconciliation for the sake of the mission that they are on as they gather their motley crew of vampire hunters to face the terror of the night once again.
Without revealing to much our heroes finally confront Dracula at the end of this issue and are about to engage in battle when…To be continued. A fast paced read with tension and laughs on each page ****
