Review: The Steam Engines of Oz FCBD
The Steam Engines of Oz stands out between the many FCBD-listings simply because of the cover alone. Twisting tales we all know about Oz, adding in Steampunk (robots, machines, tool belts, cool goggles) and the job is done, right? WRONG!
Arcana delivers something new and fresh, not only by taking the newly found fanbase-heavy Steampunk-theme but also because in this freebie we do NOT get Dorothy slammed in our faces! We are treated to a young, sparkling, blond, jumpsuited, gogles-wearing Victoria, who seems to have one both the hearts of the Emerald City workers but also the attention of the Wicked Ice-Queen. The Queen (of the Witch. No idea just yet) has taken Victoria from her working environment in the cog-filled belly of the Emerald City, to let her know that perhaps she might be the one to persuade the Tin Man, who rules Emerald City, to stop expanding the city and endangering the rest of the Kingdome.
Writers Sean Patrick O’Reilly and Erik Hendrix are cooking up a charming story, and this Preview to the upcoming Graphic Novel sure sparks interest. Yannis Roumboulias does a nice job capturing the steamy world of Oz, and apart from some sequential glitches, he makes it happen, aided in full by colorist Chandran Ponnusamy.
